Definition: Selective mutism (SM) is a psychiatric condition often caused by shyness or anxiety of speaking in certain speaking situations. Children with SM are capable of talking, and often talk at home and around familiar people. The treatment strategies are mostly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) because research and our experience has shown that these are the most effective treatment strategies for selective mutism. There are many strategies that are specific to selective mutism treatment such as a ‘Sliding In’ technique, and differ somewhat from standard strategies used for social anxiety. The main treatment for selective mutism is behaviour therapy. Behaviour therapy involves gradually exposing a child to increasingly difficult speaking tasks in the context of a supportive relationship.
